i’m laughing so hard at all these articles and fanboys complaining about morgan spurlock directing the one direction documentary because it’s ~beneath him~ or he’s ~selling out~ when in reality he made a documentary whose entire premise was selling out and one about comic-con because what the world is really lacking is in-depth looks into nerd culture.
i’m so over the constant derision towards anything popular amongst teenage girls. there are so many interesting aspects to teenage female culture, like why teen girls like the things they do, the lifespan of boybands, what made one direction so successful in the america (which ANYONE will tell you is incredibly difficult) and i think rolling your eyes and reducing it to “can’t believe he’s making a documentary about a stupid boyband that wont be relevant in two months!!!” is ignoring a really complex topic that deserves being looked into just as much as any other part of our cultural landscape.
the eye rolling and reduction of female teenaged fan culture is a reaction to reduce and belittle it. simple as that. no wonder young women feel so insecure: one side is telling them what to like whilst the other berates them for liking what they have been told to like all along. that is conflicting as hell.
make your culture, young women. support it. endorse it. question all aspects that are not up to your satisfaction.
